Introduction

In the TTS functionalities of wolkvox Studio and some tools in wolkvox Manager, voices appear in dropdown menus with technical names. These names allow you to identify the voice provider, language, country or accent, internal name of the voice, and, in many cases, the gender.

This guide compiles the logic of these names in one place so you can more easily interpret what each voice means when selecting it.

What Information Does a TTS Voice Name Usually Contain?

Normally, the name of a voice allows you to identify:

  • The voice provider.
  • The language.
  • The country or accent.
  • The name of the voice.
  • The gender, when applicable.

That is why in the menus you can see structures like az_es-AR-ElenaNeural_Female, gc_es-ES-..., aws_..., wolkvox_..., or wvxcarte_....

What Are wolkvox's Advanced Natural Voices?

Advanced natural voices are identified because their names start with wolkvox_. This group is characterized by its high level of naturalness and handling very segmented accents in particular regions, even within the same country.

Their general structure consists of:

  • The word wolkvox.
  • The name of the voice.
  • Three letters corresponding to the configured country.

Example: wolkvox_Alejandro_CHI.

This indicates that it is a natural language voice, male, and configured for Chile.

What Are Basic Natural Voices?

Basic natural voices are called wvxcarte. They are identified with a structure like wvxcarte_DanielaMex.

In this case, the name allows you to recognize that it is a basic natural voice, female, with a Mexican accent.

How to Interpret an Azure Voice?

Azure voices are identified with the prefix az.

Their general structure is:

az + language + accent/country + voice name + gender

Example: az_es-AR-ElenaNeural_Female.

  • az: Azure provider.
  • es: Spanish language.
  • AR: Argentine accent.
  • ElenaNeural: Voice name.
  • Female: Female gender.

What Does "Neural" Mean in a Voice?

The word Neural refers to the use of deep neural networks as the base technology for synthesizing the voice. This implies voices with greater naturalness.

How to Interpret a Google Cloud Voice?

Google Cloud voices are identified with the prefix gc.

Their general structure is:

gc + language + accent/country + voice name + gender

This structure allows you to recognize that the voice belongs to Google Cloud, what the language is, which regional variant it uses, and whether it corresponds to a male or female voice.

What Do "Standard", "WaveNet", and "Neural2" Mean in Google Cloud?

  • Standard: Standard voice from the provider.
  • WaveNet: Neural voice based on DeepMind's architecture.
  • Neural2: Most recent generation, trained with more advanced techniques.

These terms help distinguish the synthesis technology used by the voice.

How to Interpret an Amazon Voice?

Amazon voices are identified with the prefix aws.

Their general structure is:

aws + language + accent/country + voice name + gender

This allows you to recognize that the voice belongs to AWS, its language, which country or accent it uses, the specific name of the voice, and the gender.

What Is the Difference Between Standard and Neural Voices in Amazon?

In Amazon, there are Standard and Neural voices.

Neural voices use an internal model called Long-Form and are notably more natural. However, not all voices have a neural version available.

Are There Other Integrated Cloud Voices Besides Azure, Google, and Amazon?

Yes. There are also additional integrated cloud voices that follow a nomenclature based on:

language + accent/country + voice name + gender

Example: en-AU-HeidiExpressive_female.

This example corresponds to a voice in English, with an Australian accent, name HeidiExpressive, and female gender.

How to Read Language and Country Codes?

The codes follow the logic language-country.

Some examples:

  • es-AR: Spanish from Argentina.
  • es-CO: Spanish from Colombia.
  • es-ES: Spanish from Spain.
  • es-MX: Spanish from Mexico.
  • en-US: English from the United States.
  • en-GB: English from the United Kingdom.
  • pt-BR: Portuguese from Brazil.

These codes allow you to quickly recognize the language and regional variant of the voice.
